Secondary Texas educators, including Special Populations, such as Emergent Bilingual (EB), Special Education, Pre-AP®, and Gifted and Talented (GT), will enjoy selecting one or a series of professional development workshops to prepare Texas students to successfully meet and master the thinking and writing challenges of the STAAR®!
Each step in the JSWP® training process is aligned with grade level Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, Assessed Curriculum, and Blueprints. In addition to writing strategies, teachers will learn how JSWP® close reading techniques apply to all sections of the exam as well as college readiness. The training also reviews TEA’s recently released Scoring Guidelines and provides strategies for revising and editing.
While participants may choose to attend 1-, 2-, or all 3 days, those who attend all 3 will have the added benefit of understanding and implementing the JSWP® scaffolded approach to reading and writing that prepares students for success when analyzing a single passage for a short constructed response or paired passages for an extended constructed response.

Title: Informational Writing (LITERARY) for RLA Teachers
Date: October 28, 2024
Time: 9:00 A.M. – 4:00 P.M.; CPE 6 Hours
Participants: Reading and Language Arts Teachers, Instructional Coaches, Emergent Bilingual and Special Education Teachers (Grades 6-12)
This professional development day focuses on preparing students for success in analyzing LITERARY WORKS. Upon leaving, educators will be able to guide students as they read closely and annotate, plan, organize, and develop logical and insightful short and extended constructed responses. The day will focus on poetry since it is the genre that tends to pose the greatest challenge to young readers and writers. Teachers tell us that this day reminds them of why they became an English teacher!
Title: Informational Writing (NONLITERARY) for RLA Teachers
Date: October 29, 2024
Time: 9:00 A.M. – 4:00 P.M.; CPE 6 Hours
Participants: Reading and Language Arts Teachers, Instructional Coaches, Emergent Bilingual and Special Education Teachers (Grades 6-12)
This professional development day focuses on preparing students for success in analyzing NONLITERARY WORKS. Educators will be able to prepare students for challenging nonfiction texts, which may include non-RLA subject matter and academic vocabulary. This day will focus on cross-curricular and culturally diverse passages that lend themselves to engaging discussions and synthesizing of ideas.
Title: ARGUMENTATIVE Writing for RLA Teachers
Date: October 30, 2024
Time: 9:00 A.M. – 4:00 P.M.; CPE 6 Hours
Participants: Reading and Language Arts Teachers, Instructional Coaches, Emergent Bilingual and Special Education Teachers (Grades 6-12)
This professional development day focuses on preparing students for success in ARGUMENTATIVE SKILLS. Being able to develop an effective argument is an important skill for students in a controversial world. Argumentation builds upon informational writing; and, therefore, the culmination of this institute focuses on the argumentative essay or correspondence required on the STAAR® as well as advanced courses. Teachers will learn and practice strategies for teaching argumentative correspondence, including a thesis statement, concession, counterargument, and refutation. Also, participants will learn key argumentative concepts, such as ethos, logos, pathos, audience, purpose, and occasion.
