Teaching Pre-AP and AP English: Synthesis

We offer several AP/Pre-AP sessions.

A. Preparing Students for the AP Literature and Composition Free Response Question
This workshop is two days, 5 hours each day (not including lunch); Day 1 is a prerequisite for Day 2. Teachers learn how to prepare students for the Free-Response (Open) question on the AP English Literature and Composition exam. These two days include the content from Teaching the Response to Literature Paragraph and Essay as well as sentence variety, timed writings, and vertical teaming.

Day 1 covers the following:

  • Response to literature paragraph
  • Prompt construction
  • Graphic organizers
  • Ways to reduce grading time
  • Shared writing
  • 1-1 conferencing
  • Revising and Editing

Day 2 covers the following:

  • Response to literature essay, focusing on introductions, thesis sentences, and conclusions
  • Teaching Students How to Take Essay Exams/On-Demand Writing (same as #7 above)
  • Sentence Variety
  • Vertical teaming for mastery ofthe elements ofcomposition grades 6-12 or 9-12

B. Teaching Style and Poetry Analysis to AP and Pre-AP English Students
This workshop is two days. Day 1 is a prerequisite to Day 2. Teachers willieam how to prepare students to analyze tone, attitude, diction, detail, point ofview, organization, and syntax in prose and poetry.

Day 1 covers the following:

  • Prose/style analysis: Tone, attitude, diction, detail, point of view, organization, and syntax
  • Vertical teaming for style and poetry analysis training

Day 2 covers the following:

  • Poetry analysis: Incorporating prose analysis techniques as well as other strategies unique to poetry, including such elements as visual placement, punctuation, rhythm, and rime scheme.

C. Preparing Students for the AP English Language Synthesis Question
This workshop is one day for AP teachers only or two days for both Pre-AP and AP teachers together. Teachers willieam how to train students to write the text-based (document-based) persuasive essay.

The one-day session for AP teachers only includes the following:

  • Models
  • Large-group practice, reading and synthesizing multiple sources
  • Small-group and individual practice

The two-day session addresses vertical teaming in grades 9 and 10 to scaffold the skills needed for this genre.
