STAAR® Institute: Close Reading Strategies for the Multiple-Choice Sections; Planning and Executing the Expository and Persuasive Essays; Integrative Writing and Short Constructed Responses for the New Assessment

The goal of this STAAR® training is to provide Texas participants with strategies, differentiation techniques, models, and graphic organizers to improve writing skills, reading skills, and overall test scores among their students. Participants will learn how to navigate through the current and upcoming STAAR assessment using the Jane Schaffer® architecture to better prepare students for test day.

For the essay requirements, learn to teach strategies to 1) decode writing prompts for clear understanding of the questions to be answered; 2) brainstorm and develop an engaging idea reflecting depth of thought with specific details, examples, and commentary; and 3) execute the planning into a focused, structured, and coherent 26-line piece of writing within a given amount of time.

For developing close reading and revising and editing skills and to perform well on the multiple-choice sections of the STAAR, learn to teach strategies for 1) annotating poetry, fiction, and nonfiction passages for reading comprehension; 2) revising drafts to improve clarity, development, organization, style, diction, and sentence effectiveness; and 3) editing drafts using standard English conventions.
