STAAR® Institute: Teaching Film to Help STAAR Retesters Perform Well on the Expository and Persuasive Essays
Film is an exciting way to engage students, engaged or reluctant, in the learning process. This training provides an opportunity for teachers to help all students, especially Retesters, to perform well on the STAAR expository and persuasive essays. Using popular films, students solidify their knowledge of the Jane Schaffer Writing Program®, which helps them to feel more comfortable and confident when they are explaining an idea or arguing an issue on the essay section of the exam.
Each film study includes supporting materials and a variety of classroom activities designed to focus on a wide array of skills, including grammar, sentence building, paragraph writing, analytical, expository, and argumentative response. Additionally, film studies are aligned to the TEKS and correlate to both multiple-choice and essay writing for the STAAR.
