SBAC: The Argumentation Performance Task
This session trains teachers to use the Jane Schaffer® method of academic writing to teach students to write strong arguments for the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) performance task. In this session, you will learn how to teach all the important elements of argumentation including: 1) concession, counterargument, refutation; 2) audience, purpose, and occasion; and 3) Aristotle’s ethos, logos, and pathos, artistic proofs, which help students to understand and develop their position on the SBAC argumentative assessment.
Participants will gain an insight on how writers create a unique voice and style to compose noble arguments by drawing on evidence and elaborating through insightful commentary, voicing their position and presenting sound reasoning skills to others. By implementing the JSWP terminology, color-coding, and thought-provoking graphic organizers, teachers will successfully guide writers through the argumentative writing process on the SBAC.
