The Tragedy of Romeo & Juliet

This curriculum unit offers teachers tested and proven materials for teaching The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet to high school students. Romeo and Juliet is one of the most frequently anthologized Shakespearean plays in textbooks across the country, most often taught at ninth grade.

Using the Riverside Press edition published by Houghton Mifflin, Jane Schaffer developed this unit to offer other teachers a curriculum guide that introduces students to Elizabethan theater and shows the students the value of studying Shakespeare in the 21st century.

You will notice that the sample timeline suggests a six-week unit. This is the format that we use, but we have taught the unit in a variety of other sequences and lengths. These variations and others have been successful.

This brings us to one final comment: this unit is very flexible. We offer approaches based on firsthand experience, but we know that there are many other combinations that will work as well. We believe that all teachers adapt ideas to fit their own teaching styles; and this format, like those in all of our curriculum packets, is easily and successfully modified.
